Airsoft for Beginners: A Guide to Your First Woodland Skirmish

4 min read

Your first airsoft game doesn’t require expensive kit, military experience or a perfect game plan. It starts with a safety briefing, a rental rifle and a team ready to show you the ropes.

At Celtic Airsoft, we welcome new players to a 25-acre woodland site in the Merthyr Mawr nature reserve. Here’s what to expect at your first woodland skirmish, what to bring and how to get ready for the day.

THE BASICS: WHAT IS AIRSOFT?

Airsoft is a team game in which players use replica airsoft rifles to fire small plastic BBs during supervised scenarios. Teams work together to complete objectives, defend positions or move across the field. The game depends on sportsmanship: when you’re hit, you call it and follow the marshal’s instructions.

Unlike a video game, a woodland airsoft skirmish takes place on real, uneven terrain. You’ll move between natural cover and purpose-built structures, communicate with your team and adapt as the scenario unfolds. You don’t need to be an expert. Listen to the briefing, play at a pace that suits you and focus on the objective.

YOUR FIRST GAME DAY: FROM ARRIVAL TO LAST GAME

Check your booking confirmation before travelling. Our woodland skirmishes offer half-day sessions from 10:00–13:00 or 13:00–16:00, and full-day sessions from 10:00–16:00. Give yourself time to arrive, check in and get ready before your booked session begins.

If you’ve reserved rental equipment, staff will help you get set up. You’ll then attend a safety briefing covering how to handle your replica, where you can play and the site’s rules. Pay attention: every venue has its own procedures, and the marshal’s instructions take priority throughout the day.

Once the briefing is complete, you’ll head into a series of tactical airsoft games. Each scenario has an objective, but the pace and play style can vary. One game might call for a steady advance; the next may ask your team to hold a position or find a new route. Ask questions if you’re unsure, communicate with your teammates and let the marshals guide you.

At Celtic Airsoft, the terrain gives each mission a different feel. Take on The Village for multi-level tactical play, navigate The Trench System in close quarters, or use The Tower as a strategic vantage point. Our professional marshals supervise play and help keep the action organised and safe.

RENTAL KIT: WHAT’S INCLUDED?

You can try airsoft without buying a rifle or specialist equipment. Our rental package includes the essentials for a full day: full-face protection, an airsoft rifle with 2000 BBs. BBQ lunch is included, and free hot drinks and water are available regardless of the package you choose.

Check the woodland skirmish page for current session options and booking details. If you already own your kit, the walk-on option is available too.

WHAT TO WEAR AND BRING

Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting muddy. Choose long sleeves and trousers to cover exposed skin, and sturdy boots with good grip to help you move over uneven ground. Gloves are useful, especially when moving through woodland or taking cover. Dress for outdoor conditions and bring a waterproof layer if the forecast calls for rain.

Keep it practical. You don’t need camouflage or a tactical vest for your first game, and there’s no need to buy equipment before you’ve tried the sport. Bring any personal essentials you’ll need for the day, and check your booking information for arrival instructions and anything specific to your session.

THE RULES THAT MATTER MOST

Safety comes first. Listen to the full briefing and follow the marshals’ directions. Keep your full-face protection on in the playing area, and only remove it where and when the marshal says it’s safe to do so. Treat your replica responsibly and use it only as instructed.

When a BB hits you, call “hit” clearly. Raise your hand or use a dead rag as directed, then follow the scenario’s rules for leaving the game or returning to play. A dead rag helps other players and marshals recognise that you’re out. Be honest about hits: fair play is what keeps the game moving and makes the experience enjoyable for everyone.

If you’re uncertain about a rule or what to do next, stop and ask a marshal. Never guess when it comes to safety.

FITNESS, EXPERIENCE AND AGE

You don’t need to be highly fit to try airsoft. Woodland play does involve walking, changing direction and moving over uneven ground, but you can choose a pace that works for you. Take a breather when needed and let a marshal know if you have a concern. Tell staff about relevant medical needs before play so they can advise you.

First-timers and experienced players share the field. Stick with your group, communicate and focus on the mission rather than trying to match someone else’s pace.

Age requirements for younger players is 10+.

Check Celtic Airsoft’s current booking information before reserving for a minor, and confirm any supervision or consent requirements with the team in advance. For a general introduction to UK airsoft.
